My Not That Exciting but Perfectly Fine Life

"We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” Frederick Keonig

Magic Pants, Metavari, Super Glue, and More

So, I’m training to walk a mini marathon…13.2 miles. The longest walk I’ve done so far is 8 miles, and I was ready to be done at that point. The longest I’ll walk prior to the big race day is 10 miles, apparently the excitement of the day is supposed to carry me over the extra 3.2 miles. I imagine it will. It’s been fun to have a goal to focus on this summer as I’ve trained for it. Guess I’ll have to pick up a new exercise routine once it’s over. That’s only natural anyway since it’s going to get cold outside. Our apartment complex has an exercise facility, so perhaps I’ll frequent it. Who knows? If Christin has anything to say about it, she’ll be dragging me there at 11 p.m. every so often. She likes her late night work outs. Me…not so much. I like to be in bed by 11 p.m. We shall see.

A week ago our small group went to see Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. I quite enjoyed the movie and at the end found myself disappointed it was over. I wanted the story to just keep going. Alas, I guess I can’t hold out for that. Michelle Z. has read the book s and said the movie pretty much covered them all. So, I doubt there will be a third one. The second movie didn’t make me cry like the first movie did, but it was still pretty good. After the movie, Christin came up with the idea of finding our own magic pants. In case you’ve never seen this movie, the girls come across a pair of pants that magically fit them all (crazy since they are all different heights, weights, and sizes). So, they declared them magical, and sent them to each other in their respective summer destinations on a weekly basis with the anticipation that the pants will make something good happen. So, in our own search for magic pants, we traipsed into the handicap bathroom stall in Barne’s and Noble and swapped pants. Yup, five girls in one bathroom stall, taking turns trying each other’s pants on in hopes of finding one pair that will fit every single one of us. We all found it quite humorous…not sure what the few poor souls who entered the bathroom during this episode thought, but it sure was fun. Amazingly we found two pair of pants that fit all of us…both Michelle Z’s and Michelle H’s. Even so, I don’t think we’ll take up the tradition they created in the movie.

The next morning I took my friend, Leandra to the airport at 5 a.m. Since I was up at the crack of dawn, I decided to go raspberry picking. We went the week before but showed up at 10:30 a.m. only to find all the berries had been picked! All but the green ones…and those weren’t going to do us any good. So, this time Michelle Z. and I arrived just after the farm opened at 7 a.m. There were plenty to pick…in fact, I picked 5 lbs. I froze a lot of them since there was no way I could eat 5 lbs before they went bad. I have this great holiday punch recipe that the raspberries will be great in. Christin and I made pancakes one evening and I put raspberries in the batter…oh so yummy. I’ll have to do that again.

Last night Christin and I joined up with some friends at Calhoun’s Soups, Salad’s and Spirit’s to enjoy a concert by Metavari – a local band with a very unique style. Andy and Michelle are friends with some of the band members so that’s how Christin and I were introduced to them. Christin and I didn’t know what to expect, but were pleasantly surprised and quite enjoyed it. Here’s a brief bio (taken from their website) of the band and a better explanation than I could ever give on what their style is:

“Formed in 2006, songs were piecemealed by airmail between the members of the band who lived in Indiana and a remaining member who was living in the Far East. The band recorded bits and pieces of ideas and slowly formed songs over the course of several months. Combined with their use of digital programming, Metavari experiments with sonic textures, self-manufactured tones and vintage equipment to develop a style that is purely organic and undeniably digital.”
Here’s a pic of Karri, Michelle H, me and Christin at the concert last night. It’s been so nice to have Karri back in the Fort for a couple of weeks. She and her husband Jim have been in Philly for school this past year and now they’re headed to Burundi for 8 months serving with World Relief. Karri was a part of our small group before she moved, so it was a treat to catch up with her and hang out. You can keep up with their African adventure on their blog: jimkarri.blogspot.com.

And for those of you who need a good laugh today, I’m just the girl to provide you with that. I’ve done something very silly, and I assure you, you’ll find it funny. You see, Christin decided to fix her shoe with super glue earlier today. As she was in the process of fixing her shoe, she laid down the super glue bottle on one of her coasters. Later this evening I picked up the coaster to place my drink on it only to find a blob of goo with my fingers. Not thinking much of it, I proceeded to try to wipe the goo off, rubbing it between my pointer finger, my middle finger and my thumb. Shortly thereafter I connected the dots, realizing Christin had been playing with super glue earlier and that this goo was most likely the aftermath of her endeavor in fixing her shoe with nothing else but super glue. I don’t know if you’ve ever gotten super glue on you, but let me tell you, they don’t call SUPER glue for nothing. I tried washing it off with water first…no use. Then I tried using face scrub in hopes that the abrasiveness would make some sort of dent. That didn’t work either. Then Christin whipped out some goo gone claiming that surely it would work in getting the glue off my fingers (all the time laughing hysterically at the mess I’d gotten myself into…thanks to her). All of this to no avail. Right now as I type, I still have the glue plastered to my fingers. I guess I’ll have to wait until the dead skin sheds before I’ll be free of it. I now know how cats feel when you put tape over their paws…I can’t feel a thing. It’s quite annoying. Maybe I should try sandpaper next? Any suggestions?
